More than 4000 civil servants were among those that applied for the $360 unemployment assistance from the Government, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He told Parliament that 350,143 applications were received in the first phase of the $360 applications.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said 290,647 applicants were from Viti Levu and 4098 were from Vanua Levu.

He said 55,398 applications were declined.

“We gave people time, for example, to get their first dose and however despite that 1524 did not receive even their first dose which was the requirement,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said 730 applicants were below the age of 18 years.

He said 17,353 applicants were enjoying Fiji National Provident Fund pensions or were currently employed and had their applications declined.

“There were about 4348 civil servants who applied, obviously they were working. Two thousand four hundred and forty-three who were receiving the TELS or Toppers allowance were not eligible and there were 3109 who were already receiving social welfare benefits.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said $105 million was paid out in the first round of the $360 payments.
