The Detector Dog Unit of the Fiji Police Force detected drugs worth $116 million between 2016 and 2019, according to the force’s annual report for the fiscal year August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019 that was tabled in Parliament.

The unit works in collaboration with the K9 Unit in the fight against drugs.

“The unit was established in November 2016 and have seized drugs worth $116,473,062 from 2016 to 2019,” the report stated.

“From one case in 2016, the numbers have increased to nine in 2017, 14 in 2018 and 19 in 2019.

“The dog unit has made tremendous leaps in terms of detecting crimes, making recoveries and arrests.

“The Fiji Detector Dog (FDD) project forms a very crucial arm particularly in terms of detection and seizure of drugs at the respective ports of entry.

“The dog unit continues to work in collaboration with the other units within the Fiji Police and the external stakeholders to combat crimes.”
