Minister takes immediate steps within hours to get street dwellers assistance

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalusima last night took swift action to address the plight of eight individuals who were found living at Sukuna Park.

He posted on his social media that he found three of them sleeping in the Sukuna Park dais and another five joined them when he called the management of the Suva City Council at 7:00pm yesterday.

“It was a fruitful and emotional talanoa session as I sat and listened to them while they shared their background, the reasons why they were on the streets, and their dreams,” said Minister Nalusima.

“These young adults felt forgotten, neglected, and unloved. The stigma that comes with it is a contributing factor to their daily struggles and obstacle to progressing in life.”

“As a Minister, I will be working with my teams at the ministry and council to come up with strategies and solutions to address the needs of these young Fijians, which are accommodation and employment opportunities.”

Mr Nalusima added two of the young ladies requested assistance in starting up their small business while a young male opted to return to his village in Lau.

“Relevant stakeholders will be consulted to assist these young people in realising their dreams and aspirations.”

“My ministry will work closely with these young Fijians and other key stakeholders to ensure that they do not end up in the streets again.”
