Court bails accused

Former Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) and Amalgamated Telecome Holdings board member Sanjay Kaba, who is accused of obtaining a financial advantage of more than $700,000, has been granted bail.

Mr Kaba made his first appearance before Magistrate Sufia Hamza at the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

He is alleged to have engaged in bidding for a tender through his company, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Ltd (HLK Jacob), to provide project management services for TFL’s new office and data centre project.

As a result, he is alleged to have obtained $766,327.22 between June 2022 and July 2023. It is further alleged that he knew HLK Jacob Ltd was not eligible to receive this financial advantage as he had failed to declare his interest as a director of the company.

His sureties have each been bonded for $5000, and a stop-departure order has been issued against him.

Additionally, Mr Kaba has been ordered to report to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) office once a month, along with other standard bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned to February 25.
