The National Mix Masters Touch Rugby team successfully raised $4000 to support their World Cup campaign in Nottingham, England from July 10-20.
One of the tournament organisers Edith Wassailer shared the impressive results of the event.
“All the money that we made from the registration is our profit because we were able to find sponsors,” she said.
With a $250 registration fee for each participating team, the tournament managed to accumulate $4000.
The event’s primary sponsor, Kasabias, generously donated the prizemoney, allowing the entire amount to be allocated towards the team’s World Cup expenses.
“We were looking at $1800 for our prize money. Because the prize money was sponsored, we will get the whole $4000 as our profit,” Wasasala explained.
The Fiji Mix Masters team, consisting of 16 players, faces financial challenges as each player is required to cover their own expenses, including visas, airfare, and other costs, amounting to approximately $7000 per head.
The collection from the tournament fundraiser will assist in covering transportation and meal expenses while the team is in England.
In addition to the support from the tournament, Government has also contributed to the team’s efforts.
“There was support from the Government, covering the registration fees of all the teams and funding team kits, transportation costs, and other hidden expenses,” Wasasala noted.
This support is crucial as six teams from Fiji — Mix Masters, Women’s Open, Men’s Open, 35 Women’s, and 40 Women’s teams — will be travelling to England, with additional Fijian teams based in England filling the 35 Men’s and 50 Men’s categories.
Fiji Airways has provided a 20 percent discount on airfares for the team, easing some of the financial burden.
Wasasala expressed her gratitude for the community’s support.
“We are lucky for some people coming in and supporting this minor sports.”
