Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum should look at his own failure in curbing corruption before lecturing the judiciary on the matter, says Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

He made the comment in reference to a statement by the A-G during a International Anti-Corruption Day event where he called on the judiciary to maintain a corruption-free Fiji.

Mr Chaudhry said the A-G repeatedly paid lip service on the issue without Government taking any concrete measures to curb corrupt practices.

“I have said many times before that the presence of high levels of corruption and abuse of authority in government is a direct result of the FijiFirst Government’s failure to enact legislation mandated by the Constitution to curb such practices,” the former prime minister said.

“The Code of Conduct (s149) and Freedom of Information (s150) legislations have not been enacted in the seven years since the imposition of the 2013 Constitution.

“Likewise an Accountability and Transparency Commission provided for under s121 of the Constitution has not been appointed in the last seven years.

“This Government can’t be serious about curbing corruption or abuse if it has remained languid for so long about creating the very instruments mandated to deal with it.”
