Sugar colour issues

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation says it is concerned that dark coloured sugar is still being sold at supermarkets in the Western Division.

Executive chairman Abdul Khan said the FSC had stopped releasing the sugar some time ago.

“We had stopped bagging the darker coloured sugar months ago so I’m surprised that this is still appearing on the selves,” Mr Khan said.

He said the allocation for local consumption was adequate and maintained that no sugar was imported to meet local demand this time around.

“Annually, we allow up to 30,000 tonnes for local consumption and we did not exceed our usage.

“We have sufficient sugar available for local use before the new season starts.”

Mr Khan said the last time sugar was imported to supplement local consumption was in 2012.
