Pinktober success

PINKTOBER 2015 has been the most successful campaign for cancer awareness and fundraising so far with more than $100,000 raised, says Fiji Cancer Society vice-president Philip Low.

“This year we’ve had such overwhelming support which has been driven by concerned citizens, the diplomatic corps, corporate organisations, NGOs, government agencies and small businesses,” he said.

“The final figure will be released in a couple of weeks once all the collections have been done.”

Mr Low said apart from the outstanding fundraising effort, the increased awareness had been a huge plus.

“The most important thing about Pinktober 2015 is the significant rise in numbers of people presenting themselves for breast cancer and cancer screening in general.

“This is the most important part of what we do — getting to the problem early.”

Mr Low acknowledged the Go Bald Give Hope initiative by Lautoka lass Sanjina Narain at Shirley Park yesterday.

Ms Narain and cancer survivor Mereoni Taginadavui shaved their heads as part of the initiative in a bid to raise funds and increase awareness about cancer.
