PARENTS in settlements around the Sugar City are against leaving their children unattended or with relatives because of the rising number of child molestation and rape cases in Lautoka.

Speaking to family members of Navutu and Nasoata settlements on Saturday, Lautoka Police Station commander Superintendent Henry Steele reminded parents of their responsibilities and duty of care to children.

“Before you leave the house to attend a religious or community event, you have to be 100 per cent sure that the person left in charge of your children is completely trustworthy,” he said.

“If you’re considering leaving the home for any unnecessary activity, think twice.

“There are too many rape cases happening now where the perpetrators are very closely related to the victims or are people known to the victim and are even people entrusted with the care of children.

“It can be the most trusted person in the family, so put your family and children ahead of your interests.”

SP Steele also urged parents to play an active role in their children’s lives by spending time doing family-related activities together.
