More than 300 people in Veivatuloa Village, Namosi, now have access to safe drinking water thanks to an $85,000 project funded by the Japanese Government and facilitated by the Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation.

While handing over the project last week, second secretory Embassy of Japan Inoue Chika said the project “will enhance the water quality, water supply and sanitation standards in Veivatuloa Village.” “People of this village experienced lack of adequate clean water supply and this led to some challenges.

It is common knowledge that a clean and regular water supply together with proper sanitation is key to maintaining good health and hygiene as well as prevent diseases such as typhoid,” she said.

Ms Chika said supporting the project was an integral part of Japan’s continued partnership with the Fijian Government to help it achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 and was also in line with Fiji’s 20 Year National Development Plan (NDP), under one of its key approaches namely, Inclusive Socio-economic Development.

She said under the Japanese Government’s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGP), they have funded 423 Grassroots Grant projects for sustainable development in Fiji, totaling over 32 million US dollars.
