Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Divavesi Waqa last night welcomed Australia’s Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong and Minister for Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy to the Forum Secretariat in Suva for bilateral discussions.

Mr Waqa said the visit reflected Australia’s ongoing commitment to working closely with Pacific nations.

“This visit demonstrates Australia’s continued commitment to listening, engaging, and walking alongside the Pacific in the spirit of partnership, respect, and the Pacific Way,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of strong regional cooperation amid growing global challenges, including economic uncertainty, rising fuel costs, climate change, and geopolitical tensions.

“The importance of regional solidarity and trusted partnerships cannot be overstated as we work to address our collective priorities,” Mr Waqa said.

The Secretary General also acknowledged Australia’s support for key regional frameworks, including the Biketawa Declaration, describing it as vital for coordination and collective response.

In response, Senator Wong and Mr Conroy reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to the Pacific and its member countries.

They noted the region’s vulnerability to energy and fuel security challenges, particularly due to its reliance on imported fuel for critical sectors such as tourism and transport.

Australia pledged continued support to help Pacific nations navigate both current pressures and emerging risks.

The meeting reinforces ongoing engagement between Australia and Pacific leaders as the region seeks to strengthen resilience and deepen partnerships in an increasingly complex global environment.
