A NARERE resident charged with the attempted murder of a police officer fronted the Nasinu Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Domoniko Tabau, 40, appeared before Magistrate Vinti Prasad charged with one count each of attempted murder, serious assault, and going equipped for theft of a property offence.
It is alleged that Mr Tabau was one of three men in a vehicle that drove directly into a police roadblock on April 26. He is further accused of resisting arrest by failing to stop when approached by a police officer in the course of duty.
Police also allege he was found in possession of tools believed to be used for break-in implements, including a pinch bar, scissors, screwdriver, and wrench.
The police officer whom he allegedly attempted to murder remains in critical condition.
During proceedings, Mr Tabau indicated he would be represented by the Legal Aid Commission. Police prosecutor Constable Fazim Ali objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the indictable offences, which are to be tried in the High Court.
Mr Prasad refused bail, noting considerations under the Bail Act, including public interest and the gravity of the charges.
The matter has been transferred to the High Court in Suva for its first call on Friday, May 8, where a formal bail application may be made.
Two other suspects remain admitted in hospital. Mr Tabau has been remanded in custody.
