Niraj Surend Prasad, the man accused of stealing an ATM card belonging to an 86-year-old man, was further remanded in custody when he appeared before the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with one count of theft.

He is alleged to have stolen Malakai Kauwale’s bank card on January 5.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Salote Bola objected to bail, informing the court that Mr Prasad had two previous convictions for theft and was also facing an absconding bail matter.

The prosecution submitted that the accused posed a risk if released on bail.

The matter was called before Magistrate Charles Ratakele.

Mr Prasad waived his right to legal counsel during the proceedings.

Magistrate Ratakele adjourned the matter until January 12 to allow Mr Prasad to file a formal bail application.
