THE Athletics Fiji training squad for the Pacific Games is part of a coaching clinic which started yesterday at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
The three-day clinic which will end with a competition on Saturday includes squad members dominated by those based in Suva.
Athletics Fiji head coach Albert Miller said there were athletes from outer islands and some from Vanua Levu attending the clinic.
He said none of the athletes from Western Division was present yesterday, adding they hoped to have some before the competition on Saturday.
“We are just looking at the educational stuff during the clinic. Things like what kind of training they will go through and why and information on injuries, diets and psychology among other things followed by practicals in the afternoon,” Miller said.
“It’s more of a holistic approach. We are focusing on the off field activities that plays an important part in their performance on the field.”
Miller said the athletes were enjoying the clinic which was a new experience for them.
He said time was not on their side as they had only four months before the final selection of the team to the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
Other coaches who are part of this clinic include Jone Delai, Bola Tafo’ou (sprint), Sheik Dean, Makalesi Bulikiobo (distance), Henry Elder, Benedito Qumi (jumps), Jovesa Naivalu (hurdles), James Goulding and Maurice Erasito (throws).
The first trials for the Pacific Games will be held at the ANZ Stadium on January 31 from 9am to 4pm.
Miller said those interested in representing the country in athletics were welcome to join the squad.
