The Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association is hopeful the Lautoka City Council will listen to resident’s concerns about the proposed $5million development near Coronation Park.

Association president Narayan Reddy said while they welcomed the clarification provided by the council that the development was on the park, residents were still concerned about the development.

“The council has told us that the development will not be on the actual park, but we have to understand that the remaining area of the park is not usually used by the public,” he said.

“The place where they pointed out has benches that are hardly used and that place, you will notice, goes downhill and any resident will tell you that place floods whenever it rains.

“It is like a basin so every time there is a heavy rain, water will collect in that part of the park.”

Mr Narayan said he was grateful for the assurance given by the LCC board of special administrator chairman, Taitusi Rasoki, that no approval has been given yet.

“We thank Mr Rasoki and the council for the informative consultations last week and for letting the residents voice their concerns.

“We’re also grateful for the assurance from Mr Rasoki that no approval has been given to the developers.

“So we will keep making the submission that the development should be done somewhere else and not in that particular area.”

Public submissions on the proposed development will end on November 6.
