Army to defend title

ARMY is one step away from retaining its Tailevu Rugby Union club title tomorrow.

The side laced with experienced players such as Manueli Gade and former Flying Fijian fullback Jaoji Dakuvula faces an uphill battle against Vunimono in the TRU Senior A final at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori where the winner will be $2000 richer.

Vunimono pocket $500 for topping the points table and will be a threat to the defending champions as its top players such as veteran James Vuli and former Flying Fijian Iliesa Keresoni will lead the charge.

Last year, Army defeated Vunimono in the semi-final.

Army struggled to sneak past Nuku 25-23 in the semi-finals last week while Vunimono easily booted Mokani out.

TRU president Maika Rainima said it would be a thriller on Saturday when the two side collide as who walks away with the title.

“It is going to be an interesting battle,” he said.

He said Vunimono would be out to avenge their semi-final loss to Army last season.

Meanwhile, Fiji Rugby Union board member Doctor Esther Wininamaori Batiri Williams gave $5000 to sponsor the final this weekend.

In the Senior B final, Lomainasau plays Nakelo at 11.50am.

The Senior A final kicks off at 1.45pm.
