“WE have come to ask for your forgiveness”.
Those were the words delivered in a solemn traditional presentation of a kamunaga (whale’s tooth) by Republic of Fiji Military Forces Deputy Commander Commodore Humphrey Tawake to the family of the late former prime minister Laisenia Qarase.
The ceremony was held at the Qarase family home at Mavana Village, Vanuabalavu, Lau, where Commodore Tawake told Mr Qarase’s wife, Leba Qarase, and family members, their visit was necessary, as forgiveness is a crucial part of life.
“We have come as military officers including those who once wore this uniform to ask for your forgiveness,” Commodore Tawake said.
In accepting the kamunaga, an emotional Mrs Qarase told the military officers yesterday her family had forgiven them many years ago, even when the late Mr Qarase was still alive.
“I have accepted the kamunaga, with a grateful heart and I am so happy for this event today.
“It’s true that my late husband and I had forgiven you all, many years back, but now that you’ve come to our doorstep, we are so grateful.”
