Army regiment here to gain rugby tips

A RUGBY team from the First Prince of Wales regiment is in the country to assess the contributing factors that led to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces win at the International Defence Rugby competition last year.

Lieutenant Kitione Yalimata who serves as the media liaison officer said the team would be competing with local teams as they seek to gauge the aspects leading to Fiji’s success.

“There are two things that they are here for, one is to strengthen the ties between both governments and military base as well as for them to have a feel of how they play rugby here in Fiji,” he said.

The team arrived on Monday, consisting of four Fijian players and will be here for a week and will be travelling around Viti Levu for their organised matches.

The First Prince of Wales regiment will take on the Delta Company of the RFMF-based in Nadi, tomorrow at 3.30pm at Prince Charles Park.

Other matches lined up for the touring team includes one with the Fiji Navy scheduled for next Tuesday and later with the Nadroga Rugby union team on Saturday January 16.

The RFMF rugby team had won in the final of the IDRC against the British Army rigby team 30-10 at the Twickenham Stoop last October.

The tournament was only the second IDRC with the first having been hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2011.
