Army officer’s son allegedly assaulted

POLICE are investigating an alleged assault involving the son of a military officer along Mead Rd in Suva last Saturday night.

Sources close to the matter told this newspaper that the young man was admitted to the George Mate Medical Centre after he was reportedly attacked by a group of youths while on his way to a nearby shop.

Police have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces has not yet responded to questions from this newspaper last Sunday regarding the alleged assault.

The incident comes amid heightened public attention on the joint police and military drug operation.

Earlier this month, this newspaper asked Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu whether there were concerns about possible retaliation from individuals believed to support a group of young men who were detained by the military, leading to an alleged death in custody.

Mr Tudravu did not directly address the issue, but urged the public to allow investigators to carry out their work.
