Land at Bouma Settlement in Labasa is not suitable for any housing development because of serious safety and environmental risks.

Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo made the comment after individuals living in the area had shown no interest in relocating to new sites.

“The area is considered highly unsuitable for housing as it lies within both the six-meter riverbank reserve and the 30-metre foreshore reserve from the highwater mark zones,” he said.

Mr Vosarogo said the area was simply too dangerous for people to live in.

“The marked safe zones were commonly protected under building line restrictions to prevent unsafe development.”

Mr Vosarogo said these restrictions were in place to protect people from natural hazards.

“These restrictions exist due to the high vulnerability of such areas to flooding, erosion and sea-level rise.

He said the land has never been properly planned or surveyed for safe living.

“Since Bouma is both unsurveyed and undeveloped, and falls within these buffer zones, it has been deemed unfit for safe and sustainable residential development.”

He said this clearly shows the dangers for families who live there.

“This determination highlights the environmental risks and legal constraints associated with occupying the site.”
