ARCHIVISTS at the National Archives of Fiji have been commended for their role in ensuring the foundational data and information of the country is preserved.
This was the sentiment expressed by Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Sakiusa Tubuna, during the opening of International Archives Day in Suva yesterday.
With the theme Cyber Archives, Mr Tubuna said it demonstrated the move towards the digitalisation of records to aid in safeguarding history and knowledge.
He said the occasion marked “our” reconnection to the unique records.
“I must commend the efforts of our archivists and the role they play in ensuring that the foundational data and information about us is well kept and preserved,” Mr Tubuna said.
He said their role as the leading authority in records management was not an easy task as they were custodians of Fiji’s documentary, audio, and visual heritage, while bearing the key responsibilities of governance, preservation, and access to archived information.
To commemorate this significant event, the National Archives of Fiji held a symposium yesterday discussing the theme: How technological advances is impacting our field.
Members of the public are invited for tours and exhibitions today from 10am to 2pm.
