Archbishop Peter L. Chong had a heart attack before undergoing emergency surgery at Aspen Lautoka Hospital early Monday, 7th September.

The Archdiocese of Suva said in a statement, Archbishop Chong had been admitted to the hospital on Friday, 5th September, after developing an intestinal obstruction while attending a Leadership Fiji workshop at the Fijian Resort.

Initially placed under observation, his condition worsened when a sudden spike in heart rate triggered a heart attack just before his scheduled surgery.

“Doctors acted swiftly, stabilizing him and performing emergency surgery at 3:30am. The operation revealed that the intestinal obstruction had resolved itself, though inflammation remained, which was treated before closing the abdomen,” said the statement.

Archbishop Chong was then closely monitored in the Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units.

By 15th September, he had shown remarkable improvement.

The Archbishop conveyed his sincere gratitude to all who offered prayers, support, and encouragement during his critical illness.
