Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai says there is a sense of urgency to expedite the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL).
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said this cannot be overstated, as it is imperative for maintaining continuity, coherence and morale within the Fiji Police Force.
He said the significance of prioritising the appointment of a COMPOL was to ensure the sustained stability, efficiency, and effectiveness of the FPF in combating the scourge of drugs.
The Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua said the urgency to appoint a new COMPOL was recognised, and the Government was actively working towards a resolution.
Speaking during the talanoa session on Thursday, RFMF director army legal services Colonel Kitione Tuinaosara spoke on behalf of Maj-Gen Kalouniwai, who is currently out of the country.
He said the stability in leadership was paramount in fostering confidence, unity and a cohesive approach in addressing the complexities of drug abuse and trafficking.
“The urgency of expediting the appointment of a new COMPOL cannot be overstated, as it is imperative for maintaining continuity, coherence and morale within the Fiji Police Force,” Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said.
“A COMPOL who embodies strong leadership qualities, strategic vision and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law is essential in steering the police force towards achieving its objectives and safeguarding the well-being of our communities.
“By providing a stable leadership framework, we empower our law enforcement personnel to effectively carry out their duties, enhance collaboration with other agencies and strengthen community engagement initiatives in the fight against illicit drugs.”
