A 68-year-old man will appear in the Tavua Magistrates Court today charged in connection with the alleged importation of cocaine seized in Vatia earlier this year.

The Fiji Police Force confirmed that the man has been formally charged following legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He faces one count of Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs and one count of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs.

Police said the charges relate to cocaine allegedly seized during an operation conducted in Vatia in January 2026.

The accused is scheduled to be produced before the Tavua Magistrates Court today, Friday, June 19, 2026.

The seizure in Vatia occurred amid heightened concern over the presence of cocaine and other illicit drugs in the country.

Over the past two years, Fiji has recorded several major drug investigations, including large-scale seizures of methamphetamine and cocaine that have attracted regional and international attention.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that Fiji’s strategic location and expanding maritime links make it vulnerable to transnational drug trafficking networks using the Pacific as a transit route.
