ATHLETES with promising potential took to the field and tracks during the Church College of Fiji’s inter-house meet at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

It’s the school’s first step into athletics this year, as the zonal athletics meet and the 2026 Fiji Finals start nearing as the weeks pass by.

The school’s head of department for physical education, music and art and craft (PEMAC), Flora Dakuiyau remarked the school was optimistic for the year ahead and described the athletes taking part as promising ones.

“We’ve been seeing quite a few promising students and athletes for the zone, so we’re quite excited,” Dakuiyau said.

“The school has grown in its number to about 500 students, and so we’re seeing a lot of new students with talents.”

She added this meant excitement was abundant as preparations were well underway for the zone meet.

Dakuiyau mentioned the school’s elite squad from last year’s Coca-Cola Games, also known as the Fiji Finals, were in training since the academic year began.

“Well, we’ve had our elite squad, these are students form last year who participated in the Cokes (Coca-Cola Games) and also in the zone (athletics meet).

“So they’ve been training every since school started. A handful of them have been training with other coaches so we’re excited that we’ll be seeing very good results.”

This year, the school will celebrate its 50th anniversary and festivities for that will also include how the students will have something to look forward to and work towards.

“All the more reason to work harder and to produce results so that come the 50th anniversary in due time, we will be able to celebrate something more special,” she said.

The inter-house meet ended in the afternoon.
