Police have issued a warning to emergency drivers after an ambulance was caught misusing its siren and flashing lights for the second time.
The incident, which went viral on social media, happened on February 19, 2025 around 7.50am at the junction of Adi Davila and Kings Road, 9 Miles.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said a traffic officer was controlling traffic when he noticed the ambulance approaching.
“As soon as he put up his arm for students to cross, the ambulance then turned on its siren and flashing lights, trying to rush through when it was stopped by the traffic officer,” Mr Tudravu said.
Upon inquiry, police found the ambulance was not attending an emergency.
“There was no medical personnel in the vehicle, and the person shown laying at the back was a relative of the driver who was picked from his home earlier,” the Commissioner said.
Mr Tudravu confirmed it was the second time the same ambulance had been booked for misusing its siren and lights.
“This incident should be a warning to all emergency drivers that have the habit of using their emergency vehicle to avoid being stuck in traffic,” he said.
He stressed that “police officers have the powers to stop any vehicle, including those rushing due to emergencies” and assured that spot checks would continue.
“Police will continue to ensure that our roads are safe for all road users,” he said.
