Social media users yesterday vented their anger on a man who was caught on video belting a woman near Narara Pde in Lautoka.

The woman is seen sitting on the road and the man yells out in Hindi – “I have been telling you for so long for you to go” – before hitting her with the belt.

The woman replied in Hindi – “hit me as many times as you want” and kept sitting on the road as the man walked away, swearing in Hindi.

Former minister for women Rosy Akbar posted on her social media page “is this for real in broad daylight! Come on there are ways to deal with such situations. Who authorised this inhumane act and where is her family?”

“Cruelty towards our vulnerable senior citizens not to be tolerated in any situation. Authorities including Ministry of Women Children and Poverty Alleviation and the Fiji Police Force please take action.”

Fiji Police said officers in Lautoka were investigating the incident where an elderly woman was allegedly assaulted outside a shopping complex.

The victim has been taken for a medical (check) and the suspect will be brought in for questioning soon,” said Fiji Police.
