Ali Campbell’s ‘Fijian sunset’

FIJI and its beauty is being promoted once again on the international stage by none other than the legendary voice of UB40 Ali Campbell and UB40 founding members trumpeter Astro and keyboard player Mickey on their album Silhouette.

The trio — who now perform under the band name Ali Campbell — released Fijian Sunset onto YouTube in October last year and the video since collected more than 32,000 views.

Tourism Minister Faiyaz Koya welcomed the release saying anyone who hears the song would be inspired to visit Fiji.

“If there is a song that promotes Fiji, it is wonderful,” Mr Koya said.

“It is great to have it sung by the famous Ali Campbell who is the voice of UB40 – a favourite band to many people especially Fijians. It is going to promote Fiji in tourism. If people listen to the lyrics of the song they might really want to find out where Fiji is and it is just doing us good because it will attract tourists to our beautiful shores.”

Part of the lyrics of the song are ‘What use to me your Fijian sunset, when you’re not with me we can’t share, and the silver moon, looks down and laughs, at me without my other half, and the warm breeze whispered in my ear, what a fool am I, to have left her there.’

Fijian vude king Seru Serevi said a song promoting Fiji in the international arena would undoubtedly attract tourists. He said Jamaica in the 1950s used local artists to sing songs about their country and this made them a top tourist destination.
