Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who spent about nine years as the FijiFirst general secretary, has resigned from the post.

A three-page resignation letter, dated December 9, was posted on the party’s Facebook page on Sunday night.

The former attorney-general wrote that the series of medical procedures he had undergone in Singapore, with more to follow in the coming week, rendered him unable to carry out all the responsibilities required of the general secretary.

“Therefore, it is in the best of FijiFirst, I tender in my resignation as FijiFirst’s general secretary,” he wrote.

“This resignation will ensure that the incoming acting general secretary or general secretary will be able to fulfil all the requirements and responsibilities expected of one holding such a position, including FijiFirst’s compliance with all the relevant laws.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also wrote that his commitment to the values and principles on which FijiFirst was founded, “remains resolute”.

The party has also advised the acting Registrar of Political Parties Ana Mataiciwa of Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s resignation and advised the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) that Faiyaz Koya was appointed the acting general secretary.

FEO has confirmed receiving the notice of resignation yesterday (Monday).

“The Acting Registrar of Political Parties, Ms Ana Mataiciwa, also confirms the Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya as the acting general secretary of the FijiFirst,” FEO said in a statement.
