FIJI Airways is making a push for world-class status in the global airline industry, according to the airline’s chief marketing officer Akuila Batiweti.

He said the airline has been invited to be one of just 15 carriers to compete for the prestigious APEX World Class rating; Only 10 airlines globally will achieve this status.

“It’s the top 10 airlines in the world. And you have to be invited to go after it,” Mr Batiweti said.

“We were invited as one of 15 airlines to go after world-class.” Mr Batiweti said the airline has, for six months, been on a massive journey to change everything to meet world-class standards.

He said Fiji Airways is the smallest airline with only 24 aircraft to be considered for the award, joining major carriers like Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

The results of the APEX Awards will be announced next week at Long Beach in California.

Regardless of the outcome, Mr Batiweti believes the process has already transformed the company.

“Whatever happens, whether we get it or not, we believe that we’ve changed the business forever and you will see the transformation in our business.”
