FIJI women’s cricket team is planning for a double victory in the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in July as a lot would be at stake for the winner and the runner-up of the competition.
The two top teams will play in the World Qualifiers round later.
Manager Saiasi Fuli said the girls were working hard to achieve their aim of getting a gold medal .
“They have two aims in the Pacific Games and that includes winning the gold medal and qualifying for the qualifiers. It will be confirmed by the ICC once the competition is completed in PNG on where and where the qualifying rounds will be held,” Fuli said.
He also said the players had been very dedicated in training.
“We have been preparing well under our high performance unit and our coach Joe Rika. Our girls have been improving a lot on their technical skills and also strengthening and conditioning work.
“This Pacific Games competition for the girls is also part of World Qualifiers round. The top two teams from the Pacific Games will head straight into the World Cup qualifier. “
According to Fuli the players selected to represent the nation had come from their development programs.
“This is the first time for the group to take part in the Pacific Games and most of them they took part in the age group competition travelling to Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
“It will be a tough competition from Samoa, PNG, Vanuatu and Cook Islands though it will be a good challenge for the girls.
“Half of the team are part of our development program and has come through school programs and they have been drafted into the main team,” he said.
Meanwhile, the men’s team have pulled out of the games due to lack of quality competition.
