The launch of the certification framework and toolkit for phasing out single-use plastics initiative marks a milestone achievement for the regional tourism sector, says Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation permanent secretary Salaseini Daunabuna.
She said at the initiative’s launch this week, the program was aligned to the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Framework and Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework.
“So, these two key documents guide the work on how we will ensure we have healthy islands and oceans in the Pacific,” Ms Daunabuna said.
“If we look at the travel trends, one of the key things travellers are looking out for is the destination itself.”
Ms Daunabuna said the launch would help Fiji realise how it could create a sustainable environment for residents, visitors and the generations to come. So, we’re very happy that this has been done today. We will be providing our full support to realise the program when it’s implemented and when we’re able to do a rollout within the tourism industry.”
