THE RUMBLE Article 37
As part of AIBA’s efforts to develop the Oceania confederation, from July 11-17, Fiji will host a star 1 level AIBA coaching certification course.
This will be the first time AIBA will stage a star level coaching certification in the Oceania Region, outside of Australia and New Zealand.
There will be 25 attendee’s from around the region with Fiji given the privilege of having five places in the course (all other nations are allocated a maximum of two attendees).
We are informed that if this first event is successful (and with the maximum 25 places filled it is safe to say it is already well on its way), AIBA will stage star two and three courses here in Fiji in 2017 and 2018.
This gives our coaches a unique opportunity to fast track all the way to Star three level in only three years — a massive boost for AIBA Boxing in Fiji and a massive opportunity for the coaches who will be participating.
Note that FABA is also currently planning a national coaching certification curriculum that will be rolled out in the coming months.
Expect more details to follow in the coming weeks.
OCBC General Assembly
On July 12 Fiji will also, for the first time, host the OCBC General Assembly, another feather in our cap.
The Oceania region is geographically the biggest confederation in AIBA and despite having some of the most athletically gifted athletes in the sport, it is sorely under represented at the highest levels.
AIBA is serious about developing Oceania region and this general assembly will allow all members to come together and discuss and decide what the development strategy for the region should be.
The general assembly will be doubly advantageous to Fiji in that it will give us a chance to show the OCBC board firsthand the challenges that we face in developing the sport and our athletes.
First annual Fiji, Samoa and Tonga Tri Series
Last week we announced the first annual Fiji, Samoa, Tonga Tri Series.
Please be advised that the event will be held on July 16 at the FMF Gymnasium, Suva with the gates opening at 6pm and the first bout to commence at 6.30pm.
Ticket prices will be $3 adults and $1 for children under 13.
It is expected that there will be 12 bouts in all to be contested at superheavyweight, heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, light middleweight and lightweight.
Second Western Division AIBA
tournament
Again following on from last week, another western division event has been confirmed for Saturday, August 6 at Cuvu Top, Sigatoka.
For developmental reasons, WABA have mandated that this event will be strictly limited to boxers from clubs from the Western Division from Sigatoka to Ra.
The last western event was nothing short of extraordinary and an outstanding launch for WABA.
This would not have been possible without the turnout of the athletes, coaches, organisers, mums and dads and, viewing public.
We are sure there will be a similar turnout for this event and WABA (and FABA) looks forward to seeing you all there.
That’s it for this week. As always, be sure to visit our Facebook site at: https://www.facebook.com/Boxing-Fiji or, if you have any questions, simply send them to timessports@fijitimes.com.fj.
