The Supreme Court hearing held recently – FIJI GOVERNMENT

The Office of the Attorney General has responded to public concerns raised by former MP Niko Nawaikula, who has questioned certain provisions of the 2013 Constitution—particularly those he described as racially discriminatory.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Office of the Attorney General said it is committed to democratic principles and the rule of law, noting that the people of Fiji should have a say in the making of their Constitution.

“Public concerns regarding the 2013 Constitution and its provisions, including Mr Nawaikula’s concerns about racist provisions, can be addressed during the constitutional review process and through appropriate channels,” the statement said.

Office of the AG has urged the public to remain patient and respect the judicial process, as the case is now before Fiji’s highest court.

“The Coalition Government has demonstrated its willingness to listen and respond to cultural and political concerns through lawful means.”
