The onus is on members of the public to provide their own transport during the New Year’s celebration.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Livai Driu said this in reference to the large number of people milling about in the capital after the New Year’s celebrations at Albert Park and in nightclubs.
Mr Driu said the celebrations at the clubs and the park both ended at 1am when no bus service was available but despite this, police were able to provide security for those awaiting their transportation.
“The only challenge we had was transportation,” he told this newspaper.
“People were supposed to arrange for their own transport.
He also confirmed that a number of arrests were made.
“We were also trying to clear all the drunkards with a few arrested for drunk and disorderly, and causing nuisance.
“For the whole situation last (Wednesday) night, although it was busy, we managed to provide safety and security to all members of the public.”
Mr Driu said some arrests were made for those engaging in drunk driving on New Year’s Eve around the country.
“It was quite busy because we have so many vehicles to sight, we had a few cases of drunk driving not only in Suva. We managed to get them at the checkpoint and arrest them.”
He has reminded people to know their limit when consuming alcoholic and act responsibly.
