THE Australian Football League Fiji is happy with the skills of the players in the 2017 Powerade Cup after round five of the competition.

AFL Fiji coach and development officer Simon Highfield said the players had improved a lot from the previous rounds.

“There were some spectacular displays of experience, skill and improvement during round five of the competition at Albert Park in Suva. The Central Crows showed their experience, making it a tough day for the Lion Raiders in the women’s division,” he said.

“The skill of Litia Matanisiga and Salote Matakibau made big inroads through the midfield, setting up a 6.5.41 to 1.5.11 victory. Vasco Geitz was strong for the Raiders, continuing to push her selection for International Cup 2017.

“Undefeatedd Raiwaqa Crows made easy work of the Nausori Cats, winning 13.16.94 to 3.2.20. Captain Nathan Wesley was strong for the Cats, but little support made it a Crows day.”

Highfield said the players had gained a lot of experience.

“West Coast Eagles triumph over the young but ever-improving Suva Lions, taking it 8.3.51 to 0.2.2 in wet conditions,” he added.

“The weather turned in the last game of the day, and good decisions from Mesake Koroi in front of goal made the difference, with strong midfield pressure from Pita Wilson for the Eagles.”

Meanwhile, AFL Fiji women’s team for the International Cup in Melbourne, Australia in August will be named on Saturday.
