DISTRICT advisory councillors have not been active during natural disasters, fires and cyclones, claims Nadi resident Vineel Nand.
Speaking at the national budget consultation in Nadi this week, Mr Nand said there were serious concerns regarding the appointment of advisory councillors.
He urged Government to look into districts where advisory councillors were not residing within a particular community but lived in another district.
“There are so many disasters that have happened in Fiji, including fire incidents and cyclones,” said Mr Nand.
“But none of the advisory councillors have visited these residents.
“Even in Ba and Lautoka, I have visited them from Nadi, and their advisory councillors have not even visited them.
“So, if you can really look into the structure of the advisory councillors in Fiji, which I know there are many.
“I’m talking about the advisory councillors not been active. They should be going to the field especially during natural disasters.”
In response, Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel acknowledged the concerns raised by Mr Nand, saying that the advisory councillors were also the point of contacts for the Government.
