THE Pacific is set to play a greater role in shaping its own development agenda following the official opening of the Pacific headquarters of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Suva, Fiji. The office is located on Level 12, FHL Tower in Suva’s CBD and was officially opened by Prime Minster Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday, who described it as a clear signal of the bank’s strengthened commitment to Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
“This is a very clear indication to the government and the people of Fiji about the prominence of the Asian Development Bank role in Fiji and its securing development partnership with Fiji and the wider Pacific region,” Mr Rabuka said.
“It represents a renewed commitment. It is a manifestation of the elevated partnership and a shared vision for a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable Pacific region.”
Mr Rabuka noted that the ADB has supported Fiji for more than five decades, contributing to investments in transport infrastructure, renewable energy and water and sanitation projects.
“ADB has stood firmly with Fiji and its people during times of great prospects and adversity.”
He recalled that yesterday 10 years ago, Fiji was struck by Tropical Cyclone Winston, a Category 5 system that caused widespread devastation across the country.
He said the ADB responded swiftly with financial and technical assistance to support recovery and rebuilding efforts.
He said during the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank provided budget support that helped safeguard livelihoods, stabilise the economy and support recovery.
“We are grateful.”
ADB president Masato Kanda said the Pacific was defined not by its distance but by its determination.
“When I returned to the Pacific, I am reminded that this is a region not defined by its distance but by its determination,” Mr Kanda said, thanking the Government of Fiji for its hospitality.
Secretary General Baron Waqa said the agreement formalises a shared commitment to deliver Pacific-led solutions focused on resilience, connectivity, and climate and development finance.
The new headquarters is located on the 11th and 12th floors of the FHL Tower in Suva.
