A workplace accident yesterday evening has resulted in the closure of the Lautoka mill.

Sources have confirmed to The Fiji Times that an employee got stuck in a conveyor belt.

The belt had to be cut in order to free the worker before he was taken to hospital

In a message sent to growers last night through a messaging portal, Fiji Sugar Corporation said the mill will be closed for 36 hours.

“Rarawai grower- Lautoka mill is down for the next 36 hours. Please hold all lorries in the sector. And stop harvesting until further advise from sector office,” said the message.

It is expected an investigation will commence today, that will include the Occupational Health and Safety arm of the Ministry of Labour.
