An 80-year-old man is dead and another has been admitted in hospital after their vehicles veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

Director Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana said the drivers were at the same time trying to overtake, when the accident happened.

“Both drivers were rushed to the Navua Hospital where the victim who is in his 80s and from Suva was unfortunately pronounced dead, while the other driver is admitted in stable condition,” he said.

“The Fiji Police Force is concerned about the number of road accidents and fatalities recorded over the last few days. Over the last eight days, three (3) fatalities were recorded as well as a number of serious accident cases, also involving pedestrians.”

SSP Divuana said this afternoon another alleged fatal accident was recorded in Wainadoi in Navua claiming the life of the driver of one of the two vehicles involved.
He said it is unfortunate that accidents linked to speeding continued to be reported despite numerous reminders.
“There are billboards, media and social media campaigns reminding drivers and all road users of the need to take road safety seriously as accidents are avoidable,” SSP Divuana said.
“Pedestrian behaviour has also been concerning as of lately. “
He has urged parents and guardians to not only talk to their children about road safety, but to practice it through their own actions.
The national road death toll currently stands at 48 compared to 78 for the same period last year.
