ATTORNEY-GENERAL Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there is a lot of misinformation in the media and social media.
While speaking to villagers in Korobebe in Sabeto, Nadi, he said people would have access to the right information.
“By having access to the right and correct information you can be able to make decisions for yourselves,” he said while launching the free to air Walesi TV station yesterday.
“One channel is dedicated to Parliament which people can watch live or watch reruns of every sitting of Parliament.
“We want everyone to equal access to services that are offered to those living in the towns and cities. A lot of things are being said in the media and then there are those who are saying all sorts of things on social media. There’s a lot of lasulasu (lying) going on. A lot of wrong information.
“When you watch the TV and the Parliament proceedings you know exactly what everyone has said.
“You will know exactly what the Prime Minister has said, the Opposition had said and what the minister has said. This is some of the reasons why we have this free to air television station and taken it to our rural communities.”
He said villages would benefit most from the station.
“So people in our villages even though they may not have good roads and some of them have to travel by boats they can at least still access to television where they can stay connected to the outside world.
“We want to ensure that everybody to have access to free to air television which you don’t have to pay anything. Once everyone has access to television they can also view educational programs that can help young children learn and improve their English which is a problem in Fiji.”
Korobebe Village headman Sailosi Saukuru said the villagers were grateful for the new service.
“It’s something that I’ve wanted for our village and everyone will be able to come together to enjoy it in our community hall.”
