THE United States and Fiji’s longstanding friendship took centre stage at Thurston Gardens in Suva yesterday as hundreds gathered for the US Embassy’s largest public event to date — The American Showcase.
The event celebrated the 250th anniversary of American independence under the global Freedom 250 initiative while highlighting the close ties between the two countries and the wider Blue Pacific.
Opening the festivities, US Embassy Suva Chargé d’Affaires Christina Cavallo said the celebration was an opportunity to reflect on values shared by people across the Pacific.
“Freedom 250 is a worldwide initiative that commemorates our bedrock values of liberty, democracy, and freedom,” she said.
“These are values we share with Fiji and people across the Blue Pacific.”
Ms Cavallo said the anniversary was not only about looking back at America’s history but also about strengthening partnerships for the future.
“At the US Embassy in Suva, we’ll be here and ready to partner with you for the next 250 years.”
Thurston Gardens was transformed into a showcase of American culture, with visitors enjoying food, live music and sports including basketball, American football, cornhole and horseshoes.
The event also featured a “Founders Museum” exhibit, displays on American innovation and culture, and highlights of historical US-Fiji cooperation.
Visitors also had the opportunity to learn about US scholarships, educational and exchange programs and American spaces initiatives.
The US Coast Guard and Peace Corps joined embassy staff members at the event.
“If today is your first time connecting with the US Embassy, we are happy to have you celebrating this historic milestone with us,” Ms Cavallo said.
“This is just another way we show the strength of the US-Fiji friendship.”
