Not a single politician who has participated in the elections and alleged that elections were somehow or the other not free and fair or was rigged, has provided a single shred of evidence to prove that allegation.

Attorney-General, Minister Responsible for Elections and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this at a media conference held in Suva last Friday.

“I think it’s been, what, nearly 10 days if not more where he stood up in the heat of the moment — as we know honourable Prasad (National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad) still has a tendency of shooting off his mouth without engaging his grey matter when he gets all excited — and in the heat of the moment he did say that he knows elections were rigged and he said he was going to reveal the names of the person who said that, on government side, that was on a Monday, the A-G said.

“We understand he went to Jai Ram Reddy’s funeral on Thursday but if it was of such importance he could have told his other two members who were in Parliament to reveal the name of the person but he chose not to.

“It’s been now a week since last Thursday and again there’s been no revelation.

“You see this is the modus operandi if you look at NFP and honourable Prasad and of course the other Opposition members, they seek to undermine the very electoral system in which they want to participate in.

“And as we’ve continuously said that majority of the times I think subconsciously why they do that is because they know they won’t win the elections so they want to have a reason to say ‘this is why we did not win the elections’.”

The NFP said it would respond to the A-G’s comments on Friday.
