Dreketi Central College has made history in their school’s rugby journey by qualifying for the Weet-Bix Raluve Under-16 semi-finals for the first time.
Their hard-fought 14-12 victory over St Vincent College in the quarter-finals other the weekend, was a testament to their determination and skill on the field.
Team manager Isoa Bogitini described the game as a thrilling and unexpected challenge. Despite underestimating St Vincent College.
“The game was a breathtaking quarter-final, it was also a surprise as we thought St Vincent was going to be a very weak team, it turned out that they are a very tough opponent, when it comes to playing rugby,” said Bogitini.
He adds the message given to the girls before the match was one of pride and honor, motivating them to come together as a team
“The message to the girls before the match was simple, it was for pride and honor, I think majority of the girls, comes from different family back grounds.
“With those difficulty and hardships that they face, trying to cope with them and trying to work with them is very unbreakable experience, and for them to come together as one, and play together as a family it is just fantastic.”
Bogitini emphasised the importance of addressing and improving on their weaknesses before the upcoming semi-final match.
The support from fans and spectators has been instrumental in motivating the team, and Bogitini expressed gratitude for their unwavering support.
He called on all supporters to come together once again for the semi-final, where Dreketi Central College aims to make history on the rugby field.
In other results, Adi Cakobau School, Sigatoka Methodist College, and Ratu Latianara College have booked their place in the Weet-BiX Raluve Under 16 semi finals.
ACS edged St. Theresa of Lusicux 12-7, Sigatoka Methodist thrashed Lomaivuna High School 43-12 and Ratu Latianara College thumped Navatu Secondary Schools 31-5.
The semi-finals are set to take place on August 16 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
