Public consultations in the Northern Division on the review of Fiji’s mining and quarry laws have been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Paula Cirikiyasawa confirmed the change, advising that all sessions scheduled between April 8 and April 11, 2026 will now be deferred until after April 21.
He said the decision was made to ensure the safety of participants and stakeholders amid the current weather situation.
“The Ministry wishes to advise the public of a change in the public consultation schedule for the Northern Division on the review of the Mining Act 1965 and Quarries Act 1939, due to the current impending adverse weather conditions,” Mr Cirikiyasawa said.
“These consultations will be rescheduled to take place after 21 April 2026.
“A detailed and updated itinerary for these specific dates and venues for the deferred sessions will be announced in due course.”
He added that the review remains a key priority for Government, aimed at ensuring existing legislation remains relevant and effective for the evolving needs of the mining and quarry sector.
Despite the postponement in the North, the broader consultation process will continue, with sessions set to officially begin next week on April 13 at Tawake Village Hall.
Mr Cirikiyasawa said a revised schedule for the Northern Division consultations, including confirmed venues and dates, would be announced in due course through the Ministry’s official platforms.
“The Ministry extends its appreciation to the public for their patience and understanding.”
