Fifteen families and two schoolteachers across the country have already been relocated as Cyclone Vaianu intensified.
This was confirmed by acting permanent secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mitieli Cama, who said a small number of evacuation centres had been activated within the past 24 hours.
The active centres are currently limited to the Eastern Division, with those relocated including two teachers from Rakiraki District School, five families from Lawaki Village Hall, and 10 families accommodated at Nakasaleka Village Hall.
“I urge all Fijians, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary,” Mr Cama said.
“Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, rivers, or crossings under any circumstances.
“Please take time now to secure your homes, loose items, and boats in anticipation of strong winds.”
Mr Cama cautioned mariners and coastal communities against going out to sea because of hazardous conditions, while farmers and livestock owners are being urged to move animals to higher ground and ensure they are properly sheltered.
“Schools will be closed tomorrow in the interest of student safety.
“I call on all parents and guardians to ensure that children are properly supervised at all times while at home, and kept away from flooded areas, drains, and waterways.”
He further urged the public to evacuate early, preferably during daylight hours, if conditions worsen, and to follow all instructions issued by authorities.
