Lautoka is undergoing a massive transformation as the city gears up for the national cleaner city competition, with judging set to commence in May or June.
In a bid to secure the top spot among Fiji’s municipalities, the Lautoka City Council has embarked on an extensive beautification and maintenance program.
Council head of services Shailend Singh said the council had been working very actively since the competition was announced.
“You might have seen around the city that we’ve done all the water blasting, you can see that all look like new,” he said.
“We are now painting the city mall after 20 years.”
The upgrade includes painting the exterior of the mall, upgrading walls, and improving the city’s roundabouts.
“We’ve planted some trees, yellow plants, and some palm trees, so, this work will continue.”
The competition criteria launched last year includes levels of waste management, beautification, and greenery, which will be assessed across large, medium, and small municipalities.
