Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is not expected to directly affect Fiji as it tracks south-southeast over open waters between Fiji and Vanuatu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service.

In its latest update, Fiji Met said the system developed from Tropical Depression 11F in the early hours of this morning and was upgraded to a Category 1 cyclone, named Vaianu.

At 4am, the cyclone was located about 580 kilometres west-northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara and moving south-southeast at around 9 kilometres per hour.

Forecasters maintain that the centre of the cyclone will remain away from the Fiji group, although it is expected to intensify further and could reach Category 3 strength as it tracks southwards.

Despite the system’s centre staying offshore, Fiji Met warned that associated rainbands and strong north to northwesterly winds will continue to affect the country.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji, alongside a flash flood alert nationwide.

Strong wind warnings are also in place for Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the western half of Viti Levu and Kadavu, as well as all Fiji waters.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as adverse weather conditions continue across the country.
