Ba River Rugby Club is mourning the loss of its 15s coach, Gaberieli Walu Ratu, remembered as a passionate leader who played a key role in reviving the historic club.

Mr Ratu drowned in the Ba river yesterday and his body was found this morning.

In a social media post, Votua school teacher Gabby Ramoce paid tribute to Mr Ratu, describing him as a man deeply committed to rugby, his vanua and his people.

Mr Ratu, also known as Coach Berry, was credited with bringing unity back to the club during a time of division, when it had split into Ba River Blues and Reds.

“He didn’t just talk about revival—he lived it,” Mr Ramoce said, highlighting how Mr Ratu brought people together, secured sponsorship support and rebuilt the team.

Under his leadership, the AJ Pallets Ba River Under-21 side was formed, going on to compete in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s and win titles.

Mr Ratu was also remembered for his message of unity and perseverance, encouraging players and supporters to stay together despite challenges.
