A tropical disturbance being monitored near Fiji is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone in the next 24 hours, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service.
Tropical Disturbance TD11F was analysed near Vanuatu, with forecasters noting the system is slow moving and remains weak.
“Deep convection remains to the east and southeast of the supposed low-level circulation centre,” the weather office said.
While the system is currently in a low wind shear environment with sea surface temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius—conditions generally favourable for development—other factors are limiting intensification.
“Dry air intrusion from the southwest of the system and strong wind shear from the south can hinder further development,” the Fiji Met Service said.
Global weather models indicate the disturbance is expected to track southwards with little strengthening.
“The potential for this system to develop into a tropical cyclone is very low in the next 24 hours,” the statement said.
Authorities will continue to monitor the system, although no significant intensification is expected at this stage.
